At BASELWORLD 2014 — to be held in Switzerland from March 27 to April 3 — CITIZEN will unveil the latest Eco-Drive products, which reflect our brand statement “BETTER STARTS NOW.” BASELWORLD is the world’s largest watch and jewelry exhibition. This year will mark CITIZEN’s 29th appearance since first exhibiting in 1986, and we will welcome visitors with a newly designed booth installation.
We will also be announcing a new Eco-Drive flagship model, “Eco-Drive SATELLITE WAVE F100” at BASELWORLD 2014. Adhering to its underlying concept of “sense of speed,” this watch achieves the qualities of “faster,” “thinner” and “more beautiful.” Along with this model, CITIZEN plans to expand our Eco-Drive satellite-synchronized lineup with other new watches in 2014.
Mr. Tsuyoshi Tane of DGT (a multi-national architectural firm based in Paris) designed the installation at our booth. Building on the theme from last year, his creation represents the relationship between light and time with a totally new vision. His concept celebrates our innovative Eco-Drive technology, which enables watches to continue telling the time whenever and wherever you wear them, as long as they have light. The new installation further symbolizes our commitment to continually push current technologies into the future through innovation.
CITIZEN continues on our path as a brand driven to shape the future of watchmaking. Look to CITIZEN for the next elegant and exciting things to come.
As the world’s largest watch and jewelry international exhibition, BASELWORLD is held every spring in Basel City, Switzerland. The history of the exhibition dates back to 1917 with the opening of the “Swiss Industries Fair Basel,” and this year marks its 42nd opening. In addition to brands from Switzerland, world-renowned brands from Europe, Japan, Asia and the U.S. come together in Basel City to unveil their collections to the world. Each year, some 100,000 visitors gather here from all over the world to keep abreast of trends of watches and jewelry.

CITIZEN to make its debut at the Milan Design Week, one of the world’s largest design festivals
— April 8 (Tue) to 13 (Sun), 2014 in Triennale di Milano, Italy —
As a part of its global branding activities, CITIZEN will participate in the Milan Design Week. This global design festival offers an exciting opportunity where we can make people around the world more aware of the CITIZEN brand promise — creating the future of watches.
Since the company’s founding in 1930, CITIZEN has focused on pushing the boundaries of watchmaking so that more people around the world can wear superior watches. One pivotal technological breakthrough in 1976, based on this culture of innovation, was the development of a revolutionary light-powered technology called Eco-Drive, which uses electrical power converted from virtually any light source to drive a watch. Eco-Drive completely eliminated the need to replace batteries and democratized the joy of wearing and using CITIZEN watches, representing the essential nature of our corporate spirit.
Transforming “light” to “time to explore a new “future” together. Eco-Drive evolves the “Time x Light x Future” concept.
Appearing at the Milan Design Week allows CITIZEN an excellent opportunity to raise awareness of our brand. This world-class design festival attracts over 320,000 visitors from more than 160 countries around the world. They will have an opportunity to experience the CITIZEN brand spirit, which relentlessly forges the future through the exploration of the relationship between light and time.
The design of the “installation art” was developed by Tsuyoshi Tane, a renowned Paris-based architect, together with CITIZEN’s in-house design team. Celebrating the theme of “light is time,” the installation is comprised of the main plates — the main movement plate that forms the foundation of all watches. The 80,000 main plates suspended in air create an inspirational space for our exhibition at Triennale di Milano. Among other highlights, a pocket watch from the 1920s and the latest model will also be on exhibit. This rare timepiece will show visitors a glimpse of the origin of CITIZEN. Combined with our latest lineup and the art installation, the entire exhibit will reinforce our world-class brand and hopefully allow visitors to better understand allure of Citizen Design and our watch-making craftsmanship are all about.
Time is Light and Light is Time
"Time is light and light is time." We found inspiration from Citizen's watch-making and finally hit on this simplest of concepts: "Light is Time." Light was born at the instant of the Big Bang, the universe's beginning. From beyond the horizon, the rising Sun bathes the Earth in light, causing moving shadows to shift, the seasons to change and the waxing and waning of the Moon. When humanity noticed these things, we unknowingly created the concept of time.
Citizen came to take on the challenge of making watches that "change light into time" in accordance with the company's philosophy of "watches for all citizens." "Light is Time" is an installation of light and time. At the Triennale di Milano exhibition hall, we will present a magnificent space made from 80,000 "ground planes," the structural device that supports all of a watch's components. There, we envision a space orchestration where light will fill the space, conveying, through sound and light, a sense of light and time as yet unexperienced by humanity. In addition to exhibiting everything from pocket watches (where Citizen first got started) to the latest satellite watches at the venue, we hope attendees will experience Citizen's mission in search of an answer to the question:” What makes a watch”
Time is light. If there were no light, then there would be no time. In the 20th century mankind digitized time, measured it and continued to compress it, until eventually we forgot about its relationship with light. Without light we never would have had the wonders of the cosmos, the rich resources of the Earth or the joy of life.
"Light is Time"—the act of beckoning light's return to time—is our attempt at "21st-century light."
Tsuyoshi Tane (DGT)
DGT was founded in Paris in 2006 under the joint management of Dan Dorell, Lina Ghotmeh and Tsuyoshi Tane. The winner of the international competition to design the Estonian National Museum, DGT is experimenting with architectural creation under the idea of a "Memory Field" from the firm's base in Paris. In addition to the ongoing building of the Estonian National Museum (slated for completion in 2016), DGT has projects underway in France, Italy, Japan, Lebanon and Switzerland. The firm has drawn international attention, as in 2008 when U.K.-based Icon Magazine selected DGT among the "20 essential young architects," and for "Kofun Stadium," a proposal for which DGT was selected a finalist in the 2012 international competition for the New National Stadium of Japan. DGT has won numerous other prizes including the young architects prize from the French Ministry of Culture (2008) and an award from the Architects Association of Milan (2008), as well as being the Red Dot Award Winner (2013).

CITIZEN - Official Time Partner for the World Solar Challenge

What began as a local idea to traverse cross-country from Darwin to Adelaide, Australia in 1987, has grown to become an epic international journey to push the limits of clean energy technologies to propel solar powered vehicles farther. And CITIZEN, as official time partner, has supported the teams right from the start.
Every two years, 45 teams from 26 countries vie to design and build the ultimate efficient electric vehicle powered only by sunlight to navigate across 3,000 kilometers of hot, unforgiving roads.
With similar inspiration and non-stop verve to explore natural light power, CITIZEN has innovated Eco-Drive — the breakthrough proprietary light-driven technology that has changed the way watches are powered today. Eco-Drive is the culmination of state-of-the-art technologies and exquisite design, which was pioneered by CITIZEN as early as 1976. It drives watches by incorporating solar cells that generate electricity from any natural or artificial light source.
For CITIZEN, sponsoring the World Solar Challenge as official timekeeper is a natural extension of its spirit of innovation toward developing environmentally sustainable energy for the future, and we’re proud to be a part of such an important event.
CITIZEN Sponsor the US Open Tennis Championship as Official Timekeeper for 21 Straight Years.
CITIZEN celebrate a sports milestone of sponsoring the US Open Tennis Championships for over two decades. Now in its 21st year, CITIZEN proudly remain the official timekeeper for the international competition.
Representing one of the oldest international tennis championships in the world, the US Open began on the grass courts in Newport, Rhode Island in 1881. The event has grown to become an international pinnacle for athletic style, performance and precision, and is among the highest attended annual sporting events in the world, with a global audience reaching to over 180 countries.
In conjunction with this event, CITIZEN plan to make a donation to USTA Serves foundation, whose mission is to support, monitor and promote philanthropic programs that enhance the lives of disadvantaged children and other individuals with disabilities through the integration of tennis and education.
Furthermore, CITIZEN will donate to the Harlem Junior Tennis & Education Program, whose mission is to introduce tennis to youths from underprivileged inner-city neighbourhoods. CITIZEN will also host a youth clinic at a tennis court in New York.
The significance of the championships gives CITIZEN the opportunity to share in the athletes’ passion for sports achievements and competitiveness. Like the professional athletes themselves, CITIZEN watches require precision timing and accuracy to deliver consistent champion-quality performance. In a sport whose matches are often decided by split-second timing, it takes a world-class watchmaker to keep pace and lead with exacting standards.
One such innovation that sets CITIZEN apart from competitors is its proprietary science called Eco-Drive — the game-changing technology that powers watches using any natural or artificial light source, without ever needing a battery change. Fueled by light. Any light. A watch that never needs a battery.
For BASELWORLD 2013 — the world’s largest watch and jewelry exhibition — CITIZEN displays the latest line of products and innovations centered on its innovative policy of “The Fusion of Technology and Beauty.” This year will be CITIZEN’s 28th appearance at BASELWORLD since first exhibiting in 1986.
Coinciding with BASELWORLD’s extensive revitalization initiatives this year, CITIZEN’s newly designed booth with installation art spotlights the symbiotic relationship between time and light. Closely related to the concept behind Eco-Drive technology — the revolutionary innovation of using any light source to power watches — the new installation conveys the spirit of pushing the boundaries of original technologies far ahead.
For BASELWORLD 2013, CITIZEN unveils two new flagship models: Eco-Drive SATELLITE WAVE -AIR and Eco-Drive ALTICHRON -CIRRUS. Both are categorized under the PROMASTER marquee — CITIZEN’s renowned collection long adored by professionals — and showcase the latest rendition of Eco-Drive technology and design sophistication. These new models reflect a renewed passion toward exploring unknown territory and always aspiring to be at the cutting edge. The fascinating new look and feel of PROMASTER are sure promote the legend to even higher status.
