The Idea That Started It All
CITIZEN celebrates 50 years of Eco-Drive technology in 2026. This milestone commemorates the launch of the world's first analogue light-powered watch in 1976: the CRYSTRON SOLAR CELL, now known as Eco-Drive.
In the early 1970s, the world faced a global energy crisis. Engineers at CITIZEN sought sunlight as a clean, non-polluting energy source, aiming to create an environmentally friendly watch that eliminates the need for regular battery changes. Eco-Drive technology converts even the smallest amounts of light (sunlight and faint indoor light) into electrical energy.
The innovation became the first watch technology to earn Eco Mark certification from the Japan Environment Association, recognised for its contribution to environmental sustainability. Today, Eco-Drive watches are worn in approximately 140 countries and regions worldwide.
A Philosophy Built on Light
Loved by Citizens, Working for Citizens
Light-powered Eco-Drive technology embodies CITIZEN's corporate philosophy: "loved by citizens, working for citizens." Light shines equally across the world, serving everyone regardless of where they live or what they do.
Since its founding in 1918, the brand has held the belief of "BETTER STARTS NOW": it is always possible to make something better, and now is the time to start doing it. Operating in more than 140 countries, CITIZEN continues to explore the future of watchmaking through innovation.
The Environmental Case for Eco-Drive
A battery-free watch that never requires battery replacement reduces waste at scale. Since 1976, Eco-Drive has demonstrated that environmental responsibility and precision timekeeping can go hand in hand.

Introducing the Eco-Drive PHOTON
To commemorate the Eco-Drive's 50th anniversary, CITIZEN is releasing the Eco-Drive PHOTON, a limited edition collection marking this milestone in light-powered innovation. PHOTON refers to the quantum unit of light energy, reflecting the scientific inspiration behind this anniversary timepiece.
Inspired by the Double-Slit Experiment
The CITIZEN PHOTON is inspired by the double-slit experiment, a scientific demonstration relating to light. Two metal dial plates with ripple-like slits are layered one over the other, revealing a structural colour film dial beneath.
Structural colour is a phenomenon in which vivid colours are produced not by pigments, but by microscopic surface structures that reflect light. As light reflects off the structural colour film through the slits, the dial creates ever-changing expressions and hues. Slits are also incorporated into the dial cover, creating a multi-layer structure with depth. The design conveys the transmission of light, expressing the very function of Eco-Drive itself.
A Dial Construction Only CITIZEN Could Build
This complex dial construction reflects decades of experience in developing light-powered watches and CITIZEN's continual pursuit of new expressive techniques. The evolution mirrors scientific discovery itself: ongoing refinement, deepening understanding, and relentless advancement. The PHOTON demonstrates the brand's commitment to continued innovation in Eco-Drive technology.
Through this timepiece, CITIZEN conveys a powerful message. Eco-Drive converts any light into energy to keep time moving forward. In the same way, the unique brilliance of each wearer has the power to illuminate the future and society, driving progress.
Two Models. One Vision.
The Eco-Drive PHOTON is available in two models, each limited to 5,000 pieces worldwide. Both feature a 39.6mm case diameter and 9.9mm thickness.

BJ6560-53W - Silver
A refined silver-coloured case with Duratect titanium carbide finish defines the BJ6560-53W. The structural colour dial is visible through the slits, accented by a yellow second hand.
BJ6569-59X - Black & Gold
With its striking black-and-gold colour scheme, the BJ6569-59X makes a bold statement. Duratect DLC in black combines with Duratect amber yellow accents in gold, while the structural colour dial is highlighted by a purple second hand. Duratect amber yellow offers hardness ratings 10 to 20 times greater than conventional gold plating.
Design Details Worth Calling Out
Super Titanium™ forms the foundation of both models. This is CITIZEN's proprietary surface-hardened titanium, offering at least five times the hardness of stainless steel. The material resists scratches, remains lightweight, and sits gently on skin.
The rounded octagonal case connects seamlessly to the bracelet, creating a unified form. Dual spherical sapphire crystal with anti-reflective coating protects the dial while reducing reflection and improving legibility.
Inside, the Cal. E036 movement delivers ±15 seconds per month accuracy, 5 BAR (50 metres) water resistance, luminous hands and indices, and runs for 365 days on a full charge. Selected dial components incorporate recycled materials.
Each case back bears individual numbering alongside the Eco-Drive 50th Anniversary logo engraving. A special presentation box designed with the distinctive slit motif of the dial completes the package.

Available in Australia This Spring
Both models of the Eco-Drive PHOTON arrive in Australia this Spring 2026. With only 5,000 pieces worldwide of each model, the PHOTON offers the best light-powered watch technology from CITIZEN's pioneering legacy.
