What is 1% for the Planet?

1% for the Planet is a non-profit organisation that encourages businesses to contribute to the protection of the natural environment. It was established in 2002 by Yvon Chouinard, the founder of outdoor clothing company Patagonia, and Craig Mathews, the founder of Blue Ribbon Flies, a fly fishing equipment store in Montana.

Business and individual members contribute to the conservation and restoration of the environment by donating 1% of their turnover to high-impact NPOs with an environmental focus. These environmental partners are rigorously screened and selected based on their fit with the guidelines that govern 1% for the Planet’s six core issues: climate, food, land, pollution, water and wildlife. Members are free to select from thousands of registered projects and can donate according to their own priorities. 1% for the Planet is expanding fast; it now has over 5,500* business members in more than 60 countries worldwide, with a focus on Europe and North America.
